In school this week

Welcome back to the second half of the spring term. I hope you had a restful break.

The parent consultations this week have given you the opportunity to find out how your children are progressing in their learning. Hopefully you found the meetings useful and that you have a good idea of your child's next steps and how to support them at home. Please do let me know if you have any queries about the information provided. I enjoyed seeing everyone in school for the consultations. It was a lovely atmosphere!

During the half-term break, we heard that we had been awarded the Gold ArtsMark award! You can read more about it below, but I would like to thank Mrs Downing and Mrs Mitchell for leading this work and the rest of the teaching team for the contribution that they have made to us achieving this prestigious award.

Yesterday, I was privileged to attend the consecration of Revd Canon Dave Bull as Bishop of Buckingham in Canterbury Cathedral. It was a wonderful service and I bumped into many other people from Marlow. Everyone was thrilled to see Revd Dave being prepared for his new role. You can see from the photo here (with Laura Anne) that he was very happy too.

General news & reminders

Whole school news

World Book Day

  • Date: Thursday 6th March

Dressing up

We are thrilled to celebrate this special day and encourage all children to join in the fun by dressing up as a character from a book they love.

Making the day meaningful

We kindly ask that children bring along a copy of the book featuring their chosen character, if possible. This will give them the chance to share the story behind their costume with their classmates.

Children will have the opportunity to:

  • Share who they’ve dressed up as and explain why they chose that character
  • Show their book to a friend and discuss their favourite parts

Cutlery

If you send in a packed lunch that requires your child to use cutlery, please include this in your child's lunch box.

Science Week

  • Dates: 10th – 14th March

The theme for Science Week this year is 'Change & Adapt’ and during the week the children will be following this theme during their science lessons and activities.

The week will start with a Science-themed school worship led by Mrs Browning, our science subject lead, and then throughout the week all year groups will have some specially planned lessons.

We have a few parents and some Borlase students who have very kindly offered to come in and share their science knowledge with us throughout the week.

There will be more detail in next week's newsletter about what each year group will be doing.

Red Nose Day

  • Date: Friday 21st March

Comic Relief supports incredible projects and organisations that are making a difference for people across the UK and around the world.

On Friday 21st March, children can come to school wearing an additional red item. This could be a red nose, red socks, red headband, red hair etc. We look forward to seeing more red than usual! In return, please donate to Comic Relief using the link below.

World Down Syndrome Day

  • Date: Friday 28th March

We will be marking World Down Syndrome day in school on Friday 28th March (a week later than the official day). Earlier in the week (Wednesday), the children will be learning about Down Syndrome during school worship and on Friday 28th we are asking the children to come to school wearing bright, colourful socks that will get noticed. The idea is that people will ask them why they are wearing the socks, and they will be able to say 'I am wearing these socks to raise awareness for Down Syndrome!'

What is Down Syndrome?

  • Down syndrome occurs naturally – there is no known cause.
  • Down Syndrome (or Trisomy 21) is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome.
  • Most people have 23 pairs of chromosomes – 46 in total. People with Down Syndrome have an extra chromosome added to the 21st pair – 47 in total.
  • Chromosomes act like an instruction manual that defines how our bodies look and how they work.
  • People who have Down Syndrome usually have an intellectual disability. This is different for each person.
  • Some health conditions are more common in people with Down Syndrome.
  • Around 1 in every 800 babies will be born with Down Syndrome.

Change to library day

As we will be on a school trip next Friday, we will be going to the library and changing our books on Thursday instead. Therefore, please remember to bring in your library books and bags on Thursday.

Trip to Woolley Firs on Friday

A few things for you to remember on the day:

  • The timings will be the same as a normal school day, but we would appreciate it if all children could be in school at 8.45am promptly to ensure we leave school by 9.15am. We will return to school for the 3.15pm pick up
  • Children should wear their school uniform, but they will need to have suitable layers for the weather, as they will be outside for the majority of the day
  • They will need a pair of sensible outdoor shoes and a waterproof coat
  • All children will need a snack, a packed lunch and their school water bottle. These can be carried in a small backpack/bag.
  • Please provide your child’s snack in a named box or bag.

The Path of Positivity project

  • Deadline: Monday 17th March

Today, we had a visit from the Deputy Mayor Cllr Colleen Stapley. During worship, she spoke to us about the project and gave us some inspiration.

If your child would like to submit a design, please bring it to school by Monday 17th March.

Mural designs must:

  • Use the provided colour palette (plus white and black)
  • Include a positive message that will inspire and uplift viewers
  • Feature a design that brings joy or encourages self-love and positivity

Our Art Councillors and Eco Warriors will select the most creative pieces to send to the council. Our school will receive a section of the wall, approximately three to four panels wide, to showcase our mural. The council aims to have all designs ready by the end of March, with painting taking place in April (weather permitting).
