How children learn at our school
We recognise that every child has a unique profile of talents, strengths and areas of development and with the help of nurturing and creative teachers, each child develops their own individual pathway through their 3 years of specialist infant education. We recognise the importance of both pupil and teacher led learning, we encourage independent thought and self-assessment, so children are empowered to be enthusiastic learners and can take ownership for their learning from the start of school. We involve children in decision-making. An example of this is our School Council, consisting of children elected from each class, who provide a forum to contribute to the decision-making process in the school. We ensure the children’s voice is heard.
Aspects of personal, social, health and religious education within the curriculum provide children with opportunities to develop spiritually and morally in a supportive atmosphere. Spiritual and moral themes are also explored in regular whole-school and class worship. We build spiritual opportunities that will nurture our young children.
At Marlow C of E Infant School, we know that pupils who have a positive attitude towards their learning will make good progress and be successful.
We have therefore developed a growth mindset culture where children use the language of growth mindset, for example, rather than saying ‘I can’t do it’ they are encouraged to say ‘I can’t do it yet’. Having a growth mindset, teaches children to relish challenges, embrace their mistakes as part of the learning process, value the importance of effort, respond carefully to feedback and take inspiration from others.
We have high expectations of all pupils, whatever their starting point and by using progressive teaching methods and technology we ensure that all children are nurtured and challenged to make excellent personal and academic progress. Learning is cumulative and clearly sequenced to ensure progression from starting points through the year. Children can choose between different challenges to have a go at. Home Learning is set giving children an opportunity to research and extend their knowledge, skills and understanding of a topic. The children go on school trips, and we have visitors into school to further enrich the learning experiences for all children.
Marlow C of E Infant School has a dedicated SEND team who, with early identification and flexible resources, are able to support all children, whatever their needs, to reach their full potential.
We strive to help our children grow into good and confident citizens of the world and recognise to achieve well children need to feel good about themselves.
We create an inclusive ethos where we celebrate the abilities and achievements of children through weekly celebration assemblies, high quality displays, our newsletter and our school website. Class assemblies and school productions are used as an opportunity to challenge, extend and celebrate everyone's strengths.
At Marlow Infants, we believe that children learn through discovery both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor learning gives children the opportunity to engage with learning differently, and we have outside classroom learning areas for all children. We also have outside learning hubs as well as a 'wild world'. There is more detail of our outdoor learning here Outdoor Learning
We believe we need to give children a love of learning so that we empower them to be enthusiastic lifelong learners and in turn excellent citizens in the future.
